WHITEHALL—Officials of the Whitehall Central School District weren’t laughing Tuesday when they arrived for classes and found the covers for all the bells, about a dozen, had been removed from the hallways of the school, preventing the bells from ringing.
When school officials tried to ring the bells for the beginning of morning classes, they discovered that the exterior metal coverings of the bells were all missing, allegedly taken as part of an April Fool’s Day joke.
Despite efforts to prevent surveillance cameras from recording the act, a surveillance tape of the hallways caught part of the incident on tape and three high school students have been charged with petit larceny, a misdemeanor. The names of the two 18-year-olds and a 19-year-old have not been released. School officials said that the bell covers were recovered later inside the school building and had not been damaged. They were replaced by school custodians. The trio is scheduled to appear later this month in Whitehall Town Court. They have been suspended from classes for two days. School officials said that they would not seek any further punishment of the students. 4-30-08
