QUEENS—A bookkeeper formerly employed at both the Elmhurst Gardens and Queens Boulevard Tower Condominiums has been charged with embezzling nearly $500,000 between 2001 and 2007. She is accused of using the money to, among other things, pay off her personal credit card debt.
Indira Lall-Walinski, 40, of 1720 Decatur St., Ridgewood, Queens has been charged in a 32-count complaint with second degree grand larceny, third-degree grand larceny and first-degree falsifying business records (30 counts). If convicted, she faces up to 15 years in prison.
District Attorney Richard A. Brown said that the defendant was employed as a bookkeeper for Elmhurst Gardens, located at 44-05 Macnish St., and for Queens Boulevard Tower Condominiums, located at 92-29 Queens Boulevard, and is accused of committing the crimes between Dec. 19, 2001 to June 7, 2007. Lall-Walinski was responsible for making payments to various contractors owed money by the condominiums. The alleged fraud was discovered by the condominiums’ managing agent after Lall-Walinski left the position in June 2007.
District Attorney Brown said, according to the charges, the defendant stole $462,705.70 from the operating accounts of Elmhurst Gardens and $11,805.29 from the operating accounts of Queens Boulevard Towers by both wiring money from those operating accounts to her personal bank accounts, and by photocopying checks, then making the real checks out to herself and making the photocopies out to various contractors who had done business with the condominiums.
The fake checks were allegedly submitted to Efficient Management, a data input company.
She was arraigned in Queens Criminal Court before Judge Joseph Zayas and ordered held on $100,000 bail. She was also ordered to return to court on April 18. 4-05-08
