Florida Female Prison Guard Raped, Murdered

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA—An unarmed on-duty female corrections officer has been raped and murdered by an inmate at the all-male Tomoka Correctional Institution, according to authorities.
Donna Fitzgerald, 50, of Port Orange, a 13-year-veterans at the 1,200 inmate facility, had been searching alone for an inmate who was missing during the nightly head count Wednesday.
Authorities say that Enoch Hall, 39, currently serving two life sentences for a 1993 sexual battery and kidnapping of a 66-year-old woman, was hiding in a warehouse area of the prison, ambushed and attacked Fitzgerald. Few details have been released about the attack including how Fitzgerald was killed.
Fitzgerald’s body was found by another officer who went looking for her when she did not return to the main facility. It is unknown why she was unarmed and why she went alone looking for the missing inmate.
Hall has been charged with first degree murder and if convicted, could face the death penalty. He has not as yet been charged with sexual assault. He has been moved to a secure area of the correctional facility and is expected to be transferred to the state’s most secure facility, Florida State Prison.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is handling the investigation. 6-26-08
