COLONIE—A youth soccer referee who pleaded guilty in federal court in December to charges that he attempted to induce, entice or coerce a 14-year-old fellow referee to engage in a sexual act will serve the next 10 years in federal prison.
Thomas Gorsin, 53, of Clifton Park, was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court in Syracuse. In addition to the prison term, Gorsin will also face lifetime probation after he is released.
Gorsin, who had refereed soccer games in the Capital District, was arrested last August at a McDonald’s restaurant on Osborne Road in Colonie where Gorsin had arranged to meet the male minor.
It was charged that Gorsin met the 14-year-old minor at the North Colonie soccer site for the Empire Cup where both Gorsin and the minor were refereeing youth soccer matches. Prosecutors say after the Empire Cup, Gorsin contacted the teenager through the email address of the minor’s parents who subsequently filed a report with a representative of the Town of Colonie Police Department.
Police said that that between last July 4 and Aug. 25, Gorsin sent various electronic messages using an America Online email address to an FBI Task Force Officer acting in an undercover capacity. During the course of these electronic messages, police said Gorsin sought to knowingly persuade, induce, entice, or coerce the 14 year to meet him to engage in sexual activity. 4-14-09
