LAKE GEORGE—State Police are investigating a fatal bus crash which occurred Sunday morning about 3:15 a.m. on the Adirondack Northway (Interstate 87) Northbound, approximately one-quarter mile south of exit 21 in the Town of Lake George.

The crash occurred resulted in the death of one female passenger who was trapped under the bus after it rolled onto its side.

Curtrice E. Gravitt, 33, of New York City, was ejected and trapped under the bus after it rolled onto its side. She suffered severe head, neck and chest injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials are investigating if the driver fell asleep as they believe the bus drifted to the right with the driver overcorrecting, causing the bus tip and roll on its left side into a rock ledge.

Seven adult passengers were taken to Glens Falls Hospital with injuries. Three of them were admitted, while four were treated and released. The bus driver was also treated for minor injuries and released. An infant was on board the bus but suffered no injuries.

The bus was operated by Angelic Tours and Shuttles Inc. of Fayetteville. NC, and was transporting visitors to New York State Department of Correctional Services facilities in Ray Brook and Malone.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation and no arrests have been made at this time.

The Northway was closed between exits 20 and 21 Northbound until just before noon.

Route 9 was jammed with holiday traffic as traffic was detoured at Exit 20.  Traffic was allowed to return to the Northway at Exit 21 in Lake George.

Members of the New York State Police Troop G Collision Reconstruction and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Units are assisting in the investigation which is ongoing at this time. It is too early in the investigation to determine the cause of the crash, police said.  7-5-09
