Rensselaer Tax Preparer Guilty Of False Returns

ALBANY – A Rensselaer tax preparer has pleaded guilty to aiding and assisting in the preparation and presentation of false tax returns.
John Sterling, 55, entered the guilty plea in U.S. District Court in Albany.
Sterling admits he ran a tax preparation business called JC Sterling, Income Tax Preparation.
Among the many tax returns Sterling prepared for tax years 2004, 2005, and 2006 were at least 114 filed returns that included false claims to itemized deductions on Schedule A. In preparing these 114 tax returns, Sterling created and falsified expenses and deductions relating to real estate taxes, charitable contributions, and job expenses.
The aggregate amount of false expenses and deductions claimed in these 114 tax returns prepared by Sterling for tax years 2004, 2005, and 2006 topped $600,000
The maximum possible penalties include imprisonment for three years, to be followed by supervised release for one year, and a fine of $250,000. 7-12-09
