ALBANY—A Berne man has been charged with shooting and killing his neighbor’s two dogs.
Robert Bushnell, 50, of Woodstock Rd., was charged Wednesday with two misdemeanor counts of torturing an animal and dog stealing.
The dogs, Mocha, a chocolate Labador retriever; and Rocky, an Alaskan malamute, were found shot to death in the woods on a hiking trail. Officials say that Bushnell believed that the dogs had been killing his chickens but had never talked to the dog’s owner about his suspicions. He lured the dogs into his truck and drove into a wooded area where he shot them to death.
According to Albany County Sheriff James Campbell, police were led to Bushnell after receiving an anonymous tip. He has admitted to shooting the dogs, according to officials.
Officials said that they can’t invoke Buster’s Law in the case and charge Bushnell with a felony because the animals weren’t tortured prior to be being killed.
Bushnell will appear in Berne Town Court on Oct. 13. 10-01-09
