PINELLAS COUNTY, FLA—Pinellas County deputies have arrested a suspect who allegedly rammed a cruiser during a traffic stop, fled, crashed and then led deputies on a search in Indian Rocks Beach.

An unidentified deputy initiated a traffic stop for an expired tag at 1405 Gulf Boulevard in Indian Rocks Beach. Deputies say that during the stop, the suspect, Dana A. Shepard, 38, of Turner St., Clearwater, attempted to exit the vehicle, at which time the deputy ordered him back into the vehicle.

Police said Shepard re-entered the car, then put the vehicle in reverse and struck the deputy’s vehicle which was parked directly behind it, causing minor damage to the cruiser.

Shepard fled the scene in the vehicle, a 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix and crashed into a mailbox at a private residence located at 204 18th Avenue North in Indian Rocks Beach. Following the crash, Shepard fled on foot and deputies began to search for him. Deputies assigned to the Canine Unit and Flight Section joined in the search.

According to police, Shepard was eventually found hiding in the water underneath a dock located at 510 20th Avenue North in Indian Rocks Beach. He was tracked by Corporal Robert Livernois and his canine partner Kosmo and arrested without further incident.

Deputies say Shepard had shed all his clothing except for his boxer shorts when he was apprehended.

Deputies also determined that the vehicle driven by the suspect was stolen.

Shepard was arrested for aggravated battery of a motor vehicle on a law enforcement officer, grand theft auto, fleeing and eluding, leaving the scene of a traffic crash, driving with expired driver’s license, and tag not assigned. 10-14-09
