Motorist Ticketed In Death Of Off-Duty Trooper

SYRACUSE—A 20-year-old Cohocton man has been charged with two traffic infractions in connection with the July death of off-duty state trooper John B. Gorke who was struck by a car while riding his bicycle.
Charles W. Brewer was operating a 2007 Chevrolet Impala at approximately 8:38 a.m. on July 3 on State Route 20, east of Pompey Center Rd. in the town of Pompey, Onondaga County.
Police said that was westbound on Route 20 when he came up behind Gorke, 47, who was riding a bicycle, striking him from behind.
Gorke, a 19-year-veteran of the State Police, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Brewer has now been ticketed for failure to reduce speed when approaching a hill crest and intersection and failure to exercise due care to avoid colliding with a bicyclist.
The tickets are returnable in Pompey Town Court on Nov. 10. 10-15-09
