OWEGO—A pastor of a church in southern New York is accused of stealing funds from the bank account of the Tioga County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity in Newark Valley.

David L. Heckman, 25, of Court St., Binghamton, has been charged with second degree grand larceny, a felony.

Inclusive in this theft is the misappropriation of cash mortgage payments paid directly to Heckman from homeowners who reside in Habitat of Humanity built residences, State Police said. He has been charged with stealing monies in excess of $50,000.

Heckman was arraigned in the Town of Owego Justice Court and remanded to the Tioga County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash or $100,000 property bond.

Heckman was previously arrested on Nov. 1 and charged with fourth degree grand larceny after he allegedly made unauthorized purchases in excess of $1,500 that were charged to First Congregational United Church of Christ, Newark Valley.

Heckman was pastor of the church as well as a member of the board of directors and treasurer of the Tioga County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity when these incidents occurred. Heckman is currently on leave of absence from the church and has been replaced as treasurer for Habitat for Humanity.

State Police said they are continuing their investigation into Heckman’s activities.
