State Settles With Pall Corp. In Nassau Cleanup

NEW YORK—The state Attorney General’s office has announced a settlement with the Port Washington-based Pall Corporation that requires the company to reimburse the State for $2 million in current and future costs associated with the ongoing cleanup of hazardous wastes at its former operations in Glen Cove, Nassau County.
From 1958 to 1971, the industrial facilities located at 30 and 36 Sea Cliff Ave. in the City of Glen Cove were used in the manufacture of filtration products for the company’s aerospace division. These operations contaminated soil, groundwater, and surface water at the roughly 5-acre site as well as in adjacent, off-site areas with a host of toxic substances, including the highly toxic industrial chemicals tetrachloroethylene (also known as PERC) and trichloroethylene (TCE).
By reimbursing these costs to the State, the money collected through Cuomo’s settlement ensures the State will be able to fund additional hazardous waste sites cleanups on Long Island and New York State.
In 1996, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) determined that hazardous waste disposed at the site poses a significant threat to public health and the environment, and designated it as a State Superfund site. The Pall Corporation, under a Consent Order with DEC, has performed interim cleanup of contamination at the Glen Cove site. The settlement announced by Cuomo today requires the Pall Corporation to reimburse the State, which has now taken over the site cleanup, for its current and future costs associated with completing the cleanup to a depth of 60 feet. The DEC expects the cleanup to be completed over the next several years, and be followed by long-term monitoring to confirm its success.
The DEC is currently investigating contamination at greater depths at the Glen Cove Site, and Cuomo could seek further reimbursement from the Pall Corporation if this investigation identifies the need for additional cleanup. 11-09-09
