CHESTERTOWN—The former owner of a Chestertown dance school has been charged with defrauding her students by taking money paid for dance costumes and never providing them.
Shannon L. Mitchell, 33, now of 55 Fairview St., North Creek, has been charged with first degree scheme to defraud and third degree grand larceny, both felonies.
The Warren County Sheriff’s Office said Mitchell was the owner of North Country School of Dance in Chestertown, and is alleged to have taken in excess of $3,000 in deposits and payments for dance costumes which she never ordered or provided to her customers. There were at least 28 victims whose children had participated in dance classes at the school from October 2008 to March of 2009, police said.
Mitchell was arraigned in Chester Town Court and is scheduled to re-appear on Nov. 24.
The Warren County Sheriff’s Office is asking that anyone who believes they may have been an additional victim in the case to contact Investigator Christopher Hatin at 743-2500. 11-12-09
