UPS/Fed Ex E-mail Virus Circulating Again
Posted on Monday, 16 of November , 2009 at 8:22 am
Don’t let some Grinch steal your Christmas. If you receive an email from UPS or Fed Ex saying that you’ve got a shipment that can’t be delivered, DO NOT open the attachment as it contains a malicious virus.
The email will appear to come from the United Parcel Service (UPS) or from Fed Ex and will likely contain the misspelled word paket in the subject line. It says that a shipment could not be delivered and will direct you to an attachment that allegedly contains the waybill so that you can arrange to receive or to pick up the shipment. Do not open the attachment and try to print it as it launches the virus.
This is a real virus alert, confirmed by snopes.com http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/ups.asp
According to UPS, this email, which began circulating in July 2008, contains a virus. It’s a hoax. The company said it may send email notifications on occasion, but that they rarely include attachments. They recommend that you do not open the attachment and delete the email immediately.
If you receive an email from UPS and you’re not sure it is authentic, you are encouraged to email customerservice@ups.com or call UPS to verify the existence of any undelivered shipments.
The email will look something like this:
FROM: UPS Packet Service
SUBJECT: UPS Paket NO328795951
Dear Sir/Madam:
Unfortunately we were not able to deliver postal package you sent on July the 1st in time because the recipient’s address is not correct.
Please print out the invoice copy attached and collect the package at our office.
Your UPS
OR
Your FEDEX
