WEVERTOWN—Sarah Sargent of Wevertown, is currently studying in Carmarthen, Wales, as part of an off-campus program of Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, designed for students in many fields, but particularly those studying studio art, education, English literature, sociology and psychology, theatre, media and creative writing.
In 2008, Hobart and William Smith Colleges established an affiliation with Trinity College in Wales. Founded in 1848, Trinity has a student population of 2,200 and is known for its commitment to community engagement, which permeates its innovative curriculum.
Sargent will have the opportunity to live and take classes alongside Welsh and international classmates. To facilitate engagement with the local community, all students must participate in an academic or extracurricular immersion experience; this may include a credit-bearing internship, a school practicum, or a service-learning project.
Sargent selected courses from a variety of academic areas, including community development, computer science, creative writing, education, English, media studies, psychology, religion, sociology, studio art, and theatre.
Southwest Wales has been a cornerstone in Welsh history and culture over many centuries and its influence is still great today. Welsh is still spoken widely in this region. Located on the River Tywi, Carmarthen is a commercial center of nearly 20,000 people at the heart of a large and thriving area.
About 50 percent of HWS students study off campus during their four years. The Colleges offer a range of activities to students when they return from abroad in order to help them to continue with their experience. These include publishing written work, photos and artwork in the HWS journal “The Aleph: A Journal of Global Perspectives,” or in “Abroad View,” a national publication on study abroad the Colleges helped found and sponsor; participation in an annual Study Abroad Photo Contest; exhibiting work in HWS’ “Global Visions Gallery;” and participation in an open mic night called “The Away Café” for students who have been abroad (as well as international students) so they can tell their stories and share their experiences with the campus community.
HWS students who return from abroad also work with the greater Geneva community to share experiences and work with or for the Colleges Center for Global Education of HWS to help prepare others to go abroad. 11-17-09
