SULLIVAN COUNTY—A hunting accident in Sullivan County should serve to remind hunters that they should dress in reds or oranges rather than camouflage clothing.
Robert Robar, 52, of Valley Stream, has been charged with first degree reckless endangerment as the result of a hunting incident which occurred in a wooded area off Rio Dam Rd. in the Town of Lumberland.
State Police said initial investigation revealed that about 10 a.m. Wednesday, Terry Pelton, 50 of Sparrow Bush, was hunting alone dressed in camouflage in a wooded area.
Robar was approximately 350 feet away and mistook Pelton for a deer discharging one round from a Savage 30-06 rifle, police said.
After realizing he had wounded the victim, Robar assisted Pelton out of the wooded area and transported him to Bonsecors Hospital, Port Jervis where the victim was stabilized. Pelton was evacuated by helicopter to Westchester Medical Center where emergency surgery was performed on the pelvic region and is currently listed in critical condition.
Robar was arraigned by Town of Lumberland Justice William McKerrell and remanded to Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or secured bond to reappear on Dec. 1. 11-25-09
