Posted on Wednesday, 25 of November , 2009 at 4:56 pm

THURMAN—A Thurman man was seriously injured Wednesday when a 30-foot tree he was cutting down in his yard struck him.

The Warren County Sheriff’s Office said Donald L. Vopleus, 53, of High St., Thurman, and his father, Cecil Volpeus were cutting the tree down when it unexpectedly split, broke away from the stump and came back at them.  The tree struck Donald Volpeus, pushing him into another tree, and landed on his chest. Cecil fell but was uninjured.

The elder Volpeus and his grandson Robert Volpeus were not able to lift the tree off from Donald, so they cut a section off and removed it from the man’s chest.  He was flown by Med Flight to Albany Medical Center, where he was being he treated for trauma to the chest and head.

Thurman EMS and Warrensburg Fire, and Warrensburg EMS responded.  11-25-09
