ALBANY--Leaders from the New York State Public Employees Federation (PEF) and 200 parole officers from Brooklyn to Buffalo will attend a hearing Jan. 11 to be held by the Assembly Standing Committee on Correction.
The hearing, beginning at 10 a.m. in the Legislative Office Building, Second Floor, Hamilton Hearing Room B, will examine current Division of Parole policies and procedures including pre-release programming for prison inmates to be released on parole, supervision standards for sex and drug offenders and managing parolees who violate their release.
Union leaders will testify about what they say are obstacles the Division of Parole has placed upon parole officers which has jeopardized public safety. They will also testify and provide specific examples about the alleged retaliation tactics the division has imposed on certain officers for doing their job.
PEF President Roger Benson, PEF vice president Pat Baker, PEF Division 236 Council Leader Manuelita Clemente and PEF member Richard Mata (both parole officers) will be among those testifying. Dozens of parole officers from across the state will also attend as a show of unity and support.
PEF is the state's second-largest state-employee union, representing 53,000 professional, scientific and technical employees, including 1,100 parole officers. 1-06-06
