ORLANDO, FLA-First there was the saga of Banana Boy in Hudson Falls, NY where a 9-foot banana crime fighter was arrested in a fruity case for enacting a scene for a TV show being filmed.
Now a fruity "banana bill" has caused great interest in Florida and brought a Phoenix currency collector and 2 ½ times his investment.
A buyer who wishes to remain anonymous bought a $20 bill at auction Friday which bore a bright red, green and yellow Del Monte fruit sticker next to Andrew Jackson's portrait.
The bill sold for $25,300 at an Orlando auction. The collector, Daniel Wishnatsky, had paid $10,100 for the flawed 1996 bill on eBay in May, 2003. It's unknown how the fruit sticker became ingrained in the bill which was printed at the U.S. Treasury Department facility in Fort Worth, Texas.
It had been authenticated that the oddity was not faked outside the printing plant. 1-08-06
