PLATTSBURGH---A former Clinton County corrections officer has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting four inmates and a co-worker at the jail.
Matthew D. Smith, 43, of Rouses Point pleaded guilty to first degree attempted criminal sexual act, first degree attempted rape, third degree criminal sexual act and two counts of forcible touching. He will be sentenced March 24.
The incidents occurred between July 2003 and October 2004, prosecutors said, occurring in individual cells which are not monitored by security cameras due to privacy issues.
Smith was suspended after being arrested in October, 2004. He was indicted last June on 14 counts. An unidentified jail employee has been fired for knowing about the incidents and failing to report Smith to superiors.
Smith took a plea deal just as jury selection was to begin in his trial.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
