Jefferson County SPCA Burglarized

WATERTOWN---The Jefferson County SPCA is facing financial straits after a burglar victimized the organization over the weekend, stealing more than $5,000 in checks and cash and vandalizing the building.

No animals were harmed.

SPCA Director Linda Miles says that she believes she knows who the perpetrator is and that the person has a personal vendetta against her. Miles' work space sustained heavy damage. A filing cabinet and fireproof safe were pried open and a new flat-screen computer monitor was destroyed.

Entry to the building was gained by using a pry bar to force open two steel fire doors on the side of the building as well as to an inside door to the offices.

Footprints were found leading from the scene.

Miles says the loss is very damaging to the agency, already struggling with heating bills and other expenses.

Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to call the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.

Individuals wishing to contribute to the SPCA to help maintain operations for the non-profit organization may send donations to the SPCA at 25056 Water St., Watertown, NY 13601, phone 315-782-3260 or contact them by email at jcspca@yahoo.com 1-10-06
