MADISON, WIS---It pays to surf porn sites while working for the Michigan Department of Corrections.
A Michigan parole officer who was caught in 2004 surfing the Internet for porn sites about four hours a day while on the job is returning to work with an automatic pay raise and $45,000 in back pay.
Thomas DeLeon had been fired after his computer logs showed his prohibited on-the-job computer use but after his union filed a grievance, claiming job termination was excessive for a first-time offense.
Ruling against the state, an arbitrator said that corrections policy required minor discipline for a first time offense. The ruling said DeLeon should have received a one-day suspension rather than termination and ordered his reinstatement. 1-26-06
