PERSPECTIVES

Shameful Exploitation

by June Maxam

"Don't Let Terri Schaivo's Name Be Exploited" shouts a headline from William Greene's RightMarch.com website above a picture of the disabled woman who died last March in Florida, killed by judicial order at the behest of her estranged husband.

And just what are you doing, William Greene? We'd say it's a prime case of exploitation, taking advantage of a situation. There oughta be a law against such shameless exploitation as exhibited by William Greene, president of RightMarch.

Greene, who claims that his group is a conservative political group, says he's founded a new political action committee called Terri's List in an effort to match the fundraising efforts of TerriPAC, the PAC created by Michael Schiavo. Greene has been described as a right-wing activist that launches political campaigns and fundraising appeals at the click of the "Send" key.

That's how he does most of his fundraising, by email lists that he's bought, taking advantage of various pro-life and disabled groups.

"We'll match TerriPAC dollar for dollar, ad for ad if we have to", Greene has been quoted as saying. "We cannot simply sit by and allow solid, pro-life politicians to be targeted by the pro-death forces".

In our view, it's the case of which one is engaged in the biggest exploitation of Terri Schiavo---Michael Schiavo or William Greene.

In the propaganda published on his website, Greene tells us how difficult it is for him to use Terri Schiavo for his fundraising efforts but then he forges right ahead, seemingly at no loss for words or hyperbole.

As of Saturday, there was no registration of Terri's List on the website of the Federal Elections Commission.

Greene claims that he was in Florida last spring, "trying to save Terri's life". He was there all right, with activist Randall Terry, capitalizing on the situation and when Terri died, he marched right on to his next exploitation.

The use of Terri Schiavo's name to raise money for his own political gain and ideology is sickening and should not be condoned or supported. There are other ways to combat Michael Schiavo and instead of donating money to the politicians, contributions to charitable and educational organizations for the disabled, the brain damaged and anti-euthanasia groups would better serve Terri's memory.

"Now Michael Schiavo, Terri's estranged husband who denied her any therapy for over a decade and then collaborated with those activist judges and legislators to starve her to death, has stepped into the media spotlight once again" Greene continues with his hawking. "He's started a PAC (political action committee) to exploit Terri's name and raise money to defeat the Congressmen and Senators who tried to save her life", Greene has the gall to write on his website in his pandering for money.

"He even has the nerve to call it "TerriPAC", Greene continues "He should be ashamed of himself, but instead he paints himself as a victim and a hero, who "loved his wife". (Never mind the he lived with his "fiancee" (sic) the whole time Terri was being starved, had two children by her, and spent the money that was supposed to be for Terri's rehabilitation on lawyers in order to have her killed.) Now, once again, Michael Schiavo is hitting the news shows and the talk show circuit to tell the world that Terri "wanted to die" -- in fact, he was just on Keith Olbermann's liberal "news" show on MSNBC spouting the same old rhetoric".

No, William Greene is the one who should be ashamed of himself, as should anyone who falls for this exploitation and donates to Greene. Sounds like Greene's jealous of Michael Schiavo's publicity and appearances on the talk show circuit. If Greene's been so concerned about Terri, where's he been for the past 11 months since Terri's death and what's he done? How much has he raised for the brain injured, contributed to combat the death culture, educate and inform about euthanasia?

Greene and Terry tippytoed away after Terri died, when there was no more money to be made, no more publicity to gain for themselves, no more spotlight and microphones. Ask Greene how much he gained personally and professionally from Terri Schiavo and now he's exploiting her name again for his personal goals.

"We need to raise MORE money than Michael Schiavo", Greene panders on his website," playing on the emotions of Terri supporters. "We need to COUNTER whoever he targets and SUPPORT them, and we need to strongly OPPOSE whoever he endorses", he shouts.

Euthanasia isn't a game, Greene. Such snake oil sales tactics as yours not only exploit Terri Schiavo but desecrate her name.

Greene claims that by contributing money to him that he can "stop her estranged husband from exploiting her memory, and her name, in his shameful quest for vengeance against the honorable men and women who tried to stop him from killing her against her will".

And who's going to stop Greene from his shameful exploitation of Terri Schiavo? 2-11-06
