Tops To Grand Union Transition Completed

CHESTERTOWN---The transition of 12 Adirondack Tops Markets back to Grand Union was completed this week as the stores closed as Tops and reopened a day later as GU Family Markets.

It was deja vu as Tops had purchased the stores from Grand Union several years ago. When the Grand Union Co. underwent liquidation in 2001, C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc. of Keene, NH, bought 185 of the supermarkets for $301.8 million. C&S, the eighth largest privately held company in the country, then resold some of those stores and changed others into GU Family Markets.

Tops, a subsidiary of Giant Food Stores in Carlisle, PA, announced plans last summer to sell 31 of its stores in eastern New York as part of the chain’s long-term strategy to redefine its core markets. Golub Corp. of Rotterdam bought six Tops stores in Central New York and C&S purchased a dozen in the Adirondacks.

The Adirondack stores include two in Saranac Lake and those in Elizabethtown, Bolton Landing, Schroon Lake, Corinth, Warrensburg, Hamilton, Ausable Forks, Peru, North Creek and Chestertown. 2-19-06
