Jury Finds Top Cop Guilty of Official Misconduct

ORLANDO, FLA---A jury has found the former district commander of the Florida Highway Patrol guilty of attempted official misconduct and false official statements, both misdemeanors.

Former Capt. Sterling King, 44, had been charged with third degree official misconduct, a felony, for allegedly lying about fixing a traffic ticket for a woman he had stopped and engaging in inappropriate communications with sexual overtones.

Court records show that King had used the FHP stationery in writing a letter to ask a traffic hearing officer to dismiss the speeding ticket that he had issued Alaina Renae Edgemon, 24, in May, 2004, saying he had been mistaken about her identity.

King had been dismissed from the police agency last year and in his dismissal letter, it was alleged that after King had issued her the ticket, he began telling her about sexual experiences he had had at a nudist colony. He also allegedly asked to see a bag of condoms that she had in the glove compartment of the car and took several of them.

King was fined $1,500. 2-21-06
