MINEOLA—The driver of a fuel oil delivery truck has been charged with attempted grand larceny in the fourth degree, a Class A misdemeanor, and possession of a false device, an unclassified misdemeanor under the state’s Agriculture and Markets Law, for his alleged theft of 500 gallons of home heating oil from the senior citizen facility, Town of Hempstead Housing, Park Gardens in Uniondale.
Vincent Sciabica, 40, was driving a heating fuel truck registered to S. J. Fuel Oil Co. Inc. of 601 Union St., Brooklyn on Feb. 2 when he was stopped by a Garden City police officer because the truck appeared to be overweight.
While the officer inspected the vehicle for possible vehicle violations, he noticed that a deliver ticket, made out to the senior center, had been inserted into the truck’s oil meter and had recorded 500 gallons of oil which had already been pumped.
Prosecutors said that the officer believed that a delivery ticket is removed from the meter upon delivery and completion of sale and this led the officer to contact the New York State Petroleum, Alcohol and Tobacco Bureau, the Nassau County Office of Consumer Affairs and the Bureau of Weights and Measures to continue the investigation of the vehicle. 2-23-06
