Court Clerk Admits To Making False Statements to FBI

BIRMINGHAM, ALA---The circuit court clerk in Lamar County, a former police chief, has agreed to plead guilty to obstruction of justice and making false statements to federal investigators.

According to U.S. prosecutors, Curtis Lee Graham, 47, of Vernon, has admitted to relaying information about a government informant to a suspected drug dealer, suggesting that the informant be killed and offering to tamper with the formation of a grand jury into the matter.

Graham, who has held his courthouse job for the past 10 years, will also admit to making a false statement to the FBI about offering to tamper with the grand jury.

He could be sentenced up to 20 years for the obstruction charge with an additional five years for making a false statement in addition to a $250,000 fine.

Prosecutors said an investigation began in November, 2003 of an alleged drug smuggling operation using the U.S. Postal Service. 2-24-06
