Ohioan Charged With Making Over 2,500 Obscene Phone Calls

COSHOCTON, OHIO---Perhaps he’s a candidate for the Guinness Book of World Records.

A Granville man can’t use a telephone, cell phone or the Internet as the result of his arrest for making over 2,500 harassing and obscene phone calls to random cell phone numbers.

James R. Hood, 43, has been charged with one count of compelling prostitution or offering money for sex after sheriff’s deputies subpoenaed his phone records and found that he had laced 2,623 phone calls in 20 days, 977 of those to cell phone numbers beginning with 502. All told, police said he placed calls to random telephone numbers in at least eight counties, and “all basically obscene in nature” according to the Coshocton County Sheriff’s office.

Police said most of the calls were made between 2 and 3 a.m.

He has posted a $50,000 bond with the stipulation that he cannot use any telecommunications. He also cannot have contact with anyone under the age of 18.

Officials said the investigation is continuing and additional charges could be lodged.

The Coshocton County prosecutor’s office said the matter would be presented to a grand jury. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 17.

Granville is about 25 miles east of Columbus. 3-09-06
