OpEd - No Divided Allegiance

By Oscar Forbes

Theodore Roosevelt's words relating to immigrants and their status in America need to be crammed down the collective throats of our elected officials, day and night, 24/7, for their truth begs so loudly, and their need is greater now than any other time in our history.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." - - Theodore Roosevelt (1919)

Why can we not learn from our past leader's wisdom and accomplishments, and never forget the mistakes made by those leaders whose deeds were not so great?

Why do we not protect and cherish the things that made us so great and powerful, so humble, so generous, so gracious, and thankful to our maker for our successes, our freedoms and liberties, that which we enjoy so much, yet, we give lip-service to protecting those things with our lives, on battle fields of the past and present, throughout the world, that others may enjoy the same as we, Americans?

Why have we become so materially possessed, so much so that our material wealth is more important than our inherited moral Christian values and principles?

Why have we become so divided, so hateful toward others who disagree with us, ideologically, morally, ethically, politically, and lastly, the hateful attacks made on our religious faith?

Why is there so little national unity, patriotism, allegiance to our flag, and that for which it stands, respect for our political leaders, and most of all, respect for the Office of the Presidency, no matter the political party in power?

Our moral goodness tells us, there should be no room for hatred in America, instead, we should be more respectful toward our fellow man.  Why is this so hard for the people to understand?  Some Sociologists have given us the answers to these basic questions, but for our own greed and self interest, we have slaughtered the messenger, because we don't like the message.

How ironic?  Satan could not have done it alone, but for the help of a greedy, corrupt, morally bankrupt societal decline.

Our new motto should more accurately read:  We, with all of our corporate powers shall inherit the earth, and the people shall lose their souls in pursuit of our dreams, owe their allegiance to our powers, our rules, our values, our principles of economics, and obedience to all that is mightier than they, as individuals, or collectively as a single group, and Congress shall make all laws in favor of us over the people.  We, swear to uphold these principles and laws, so help us, in the name of our economic God...
