ANAHEIM, CA---The California based firm Alarm One Inc. seems to have a unique program to motivate employees and because of it, a former employee is seeking $1.2 million from a jury, alleging discrimination, assault, battery and inflection of emotional distress.
Janet Orlando, 53, says she was spanked in front of co-workers with yard signs from competing companies that court documents said was part of a contest between sales teams. Losers were subjected to having pies thrown at them, being fed baby food, having to wear diapers and being spanked.
Company attorneys said that the spankings were part of a voluntary program geared to build camaraderie among the 300 employees at the firm and didn't discriminate because both male and female workers were subjected to the same treatment. They claimed the woman was filing suit for mercenary reasons.
Orlando quit the Anaheim-based firm. The company stopped the "contests" in 2004 after Orlando sued and after another employee complained of being injured. 4-27-06
