Phony Magazine Publisher Gets Shock

WESTCHESTER COUNTY---A Queens woman who masqueraded as a magazine publisher has been sentenced for defrauding more than 43 small businesses around the U.S. of nearly $125,000.

Westchester district attorney Janet DiFiore said that over a three year period from Jan. 1, 2002 to Feb. 28, 2005, Elise Wilson, 32, created a non-existent magazine, "Wellness Today", complete with a media kit, and sold ads that were never published. She operated out of an office at 75 South Broadway in White Plains and deposited the solicited checks in an account under the name of "Wellness Today Publishing Company".

Wilson was sentenced to five years shock probation which entails six months in the Westchester County Jail and four and half years probation. She was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $63,000 as a condition of her probation. Additional judgment orders for restitution of the total amount of the $124,665.90 theft were also issued. 4-28-06
