Two Guilty of Mousy Extortion Attempt

NEWPORT NEWS, VA---A woman and her adult son face up to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of conspiracy to commit extortion from a Cracker Barrel restaurant.

Carla Patterson, 38, and her son, Ricky, 22, claimed they found a dead mouse in a bowl of vegetable soup while dining at the restaurant on Mothers Day in 2004 and sought to collect $500,000 from the company.

However, a mouse autopsy revealed that the mouse had died of a fractured skull, didn't have soup in its lungs and hadn't been cooked.

The jury deliberated four hours before returning the guilty verdict. They recommended that they each be sentenced to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine. Sentencing is July 5. 4-30-06
