ALBANY---The former press secretary of Gov. George E. Pataki was charged Thursday night with driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a property damage accident, both misdemeanors.
Albany City Police arrested Joseph Conway, 40, of Slingerlands, after witnesses saw him allegedly drive into the rear of a parked car at Delaware Avenue and Leonard Place. Police said that the unoccupied car was totaled. Records indicate that the car Conway was driving is registered to the state Office of General Services.
Court records indicate that Conway's blood alcohol content was at .23 percent, nearly three times the state limit of .08. Conway is now the director of special projects for the Governor.
The witnesses to the accident followed Conway, who has served in various capacities for the Governor for the past 10 years. Police found him in a car parked near the scene of the accident. He failed a field sobriety test as well as a breathalyzer test.
Conway has been placed on paid leave from his state position. 5-12-06
