Health Care Networks Awarded $52.9 Million In Grants

ALBANY---Twenty-six regional health care networks across the state have been provided $52.9 million in grant awards as part of New York's Health Information Technology (HIT) initiative. These projects are designed to help expand the use of technology in New York's health care system and improve the quality of care for patients.

"New York has some of the most advanced health care facilities in the world and by advancing these new initiatives we will not only continue to ensure that this remains the case, it will ultimately bring us into a whole new world of health care," Governor George Pataki said. "This health technology movement will ultimately lead to better communication at all levels of the health care system and throughout the nation, enabling patients to take more active roles in their health care choices and get the best possible treatment."

New York's HIT initiative will increase the capability and use of electronic health records among health care providers, reduce medical errors, and prevent unnecessary or duplicative diagnostic testing. Providers will be able to share electronic data on patients via highly secured server networks to better ensure that appropriate medical care is delivered to patients.

One of the primary goals of the HIT projects is to provide patients with greater access to their own health records so that they can make better informed health care decisions in consultation with their doctors. The electronic patient medical records may include reports on past diagnoses, surgical procedures, imaging studies, allergies, prescription drug history and laboratory information, among other key data.

Expanded access to this health information will lead to the delivery of a higher quality, more efficient level of care by medical providers. The projects supported under this initiative will also make it easier for medical researchers to report on their disease surveillance activities and effectively communicate those findings to clinicians in a more timely and detailed manner.

The funding for this initiative was dedicated under the Health Care Efficiency and Affordability Law for New Yorkers (HEAL NY) to help advance information technology and the restructuring of the health care delivery system. HEAL NY will help support the building of important infrastructure in New York's health care system which will be necessary to help create and implement regionalized HIT projects across the state.
