ROCHESTER-The cop who was supposed to stopping cyber crime was instead using his position to spy on his neighbor.
R. Michael Hildreth, 44, an investigator with the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, has been indicted on felony counts of third degree computer trespassing and eavesdropping for using his official status to engage in online crimes instead of detecting them.
Hildreth was employed in the computer division of the sheriff's department. According to the indictment, between May 18 and Oct. 18, 2005, he used his official position to monitor the computer of his neighbor and alter the neighbor's information. The neighbor had filed a complaint in May 2005.
Hildreth has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to reappear in court on June 29. 6-23-06
