Insurance Agent Indicted For Keeping Premiums

GLOVERSVILLE---A long-time insurance agent has been indicted by a Fulton County Grand Jury on charges that he falsified records to show that customers had insurance policies when they didn't because he had allegedly failed to pay the premium money he collected to insurance companies.

Jeffrey Burton, 51, of Mayfield has been charged with five counts of first degree offering a false instrument for filing and first degree falsifying business records in addition to one count of second degree forgery.

Prosecutors say that he accepted insurance payments from customers but never turned the money into the company so their insurance policies were never effected. The investigation began when several customers filed complaints with the Fulton County district attorney's office last summer.

Burton operated a family owned insurance agency which was founded in 1890. He was arrested Jan. 24 after the insurance agency was raided by the state Insurance Department, Department of Motor Vehicles and the Gloversville police department. 6-25-06
