A popular series of New York State Bar Association pamphlets providing information on several areas of law has been expanded to include a pamphlet on animal law in New York State and is now available to the public.
"Animal Law in New York State" is the latest pamphlet in the Association's LEGALease series of 16 pamphlets. The new pamphlet discusses dog licensing, leash law, spaying and neutering laws, purchasing a dog or cat, New York laws concerning penalties for animal cruelty, abandonment and neglect, appropriate outdoor shelter for dogs, the federal Animal Welfare Act and dangerous dogs.
Pet trusts, rights of individuals with disabilities and their service animals, veterinary malpractice and negligence, companion animals and housing issues and feral cats are also covered in the pamphlet.
"The concern for animals in our society has grown considerably in the past several years, and the need to know Animal Law was never more apparent than after Hurricane Katrina stranded literally hundreds of pets," said Holly Kennedy Passantino, chair of the State Bar's Special Committee on Animals and the Law. "This pamphlet can act as a roadmap to finding information on the laws governing animal welfare in New York State."
Other topics discussed in the series include Adoption in New York, The Attorney's Role in Buying or Selling a House, Buying and Selling Real Estate, Divorce and Separation in New York State, HIV/AIDS and the Law, If You Have an Auto Accident, Intellectual Property, Living Wills and Health Care Proxies, Rights of Residential Owners and Tenants, Why You Need a Will, You and Your Lawyer, Your Rights If Arrested, Your Rights to an Appeal in a Criminal Case and Your Rights as a Crime Victim.
All of the State Bar's LEGALease pamphlets can be purchased for $12.50 per packet of 50 for State Bar members and $22.50 for non-members.
