MONROE, CONN---Carrots are supposed to be good for your vision.
However, a Monroe woman would no doubt argue the point.
Pamela Vecsey, 46, lost the vision in her left eye Saturday night after her husband allegedly threw a carrot at her.
Roderick Vecsey, 46, was being held on $50,000 bail Sunday, charged with second degree assault and disorderly conduct.
Police had been called to the Vecsey home last Saturday night for a disturbance and upon arriving, found Patricia Vecsey injured, her left eye swollen and bleeding. She underwent six hours of surgery but doctors were unable to restore her vision in that eye.
Vecsey told police on their arrival that he had thrown a carrot at his wife during an argument about who was going to take their daughter to the doctor. Vecsey had been eating a carrot at the time and allegedly threw the vegetable about 20 feet.
At his initial arraignment, he told Superior Court Judge Patrick Carroll it was "all a terrible accident" before the judge told him to remain silent. Carroll had initially set bail at $500 but on Friday, another Superior Court Judge, Denise Markle, increased his bond to $50,000 saying that due to his "explosive nature of your actions, I cannot find that you will not offend again".
Vecsey's attorney says that the incident was an accident and his client had no intent to injure his wife. A senior assistant state attorney told the judge that he has doubts about the case and whether Mrs. Vecsey's claims are credible.
Police were unable to recover the carrot.
Vecsey has been ordered to leave the family home and to have no contact with his wife until after the matter is adjudicated. He has also been ordered to attend anger management classes. 7-23-06
