Former Cop Sentenced For Attempted Murder

WATERTOWN --  A former Watertown police officer will spend the next 15 years in state prison.

Joseph Michael VanWaldick pleaded guilty June 20 to attempted murder, kidnapping and grand larceny charges to shooting Ryan Dorr, 27, with a handgun on Dec. 8, 2004, at Dorr’s Watertown apartment. According to court records, VanWaldick climbed a ladder to the bedroom window of Dorr’s apartment and shot Dorr in the back, then twice in the chest.

VanWaldick was off-duty at the time. Jessica Quinta, 24, VanWaldick’s ex-girlfriend, was in the apartment at the time of the shooting and not injured. VanWaldick allegedly kidnapped Quinta but later released her unharmed.

After a manhunt, he turned himself into police.

He was ordered to pay more than $13,000 in restitution and will be placed on five years of supervised release after he completes his prison term. 8-17-05
