Washington County Public Defender Arrested

SALEM--Washington County’s public defender is going to need his own defense counsel.

Joseph H. Oswald, 50, of Salem, who has represented indigent defendants in criminal and family court matters for about 13 ½ years in Washington County Courts, has been charged with issuing a bad check, a misdemeanor, for allegedly bouncing a $1,200 check to his landlord in April.

Oswald had resigned his position the day before he was arrested. He had been assistant public defender for about 10 years before being named to the top slot 3 ½ years ago.

His law partner, Jeffrey McMorris who was also first assistant public defender under Oswald, has been temporarily appointed to fill his position and may receive a full-time assignment at a meeting later this week by the Washington County Board of Supervisors.

Oswald cited no reason for his resignation.

He is scheduled to appear in Salem Town Court. 8-17-05
