ALBANY--State
Health Commissioner Antonia C. Novello has announced that the
department has received the New York State Forum's prestigious 2005
'Best of the Web' Award for its state-of-the-art and user-friendly web
site, www.nyhealth.gov.
The
Forum, part of the Rockefeller Institute of Government, is a network of
public officials and state government organizations who focus on
information management, policy, and technology. To be eligible for the
award, government web sites had to be functioning at the time of the
nomination and be in compliance with the New York State Office for
Technology's best practices. A panel of judges reviewed each of the
sites nominated and evaluated applications on the innovative use of
technology, value to the user, and cost-efficiency to the agency.
"The Department's new-look website has been modernized and includes a
wide array of health care information in a concise and easy-to-read
format. People looking for accurate and reliable health care
information can obtain it 24/7 from any computer with internet access,
anywhere in the world," said Dr. Novello. "This website builds on
Governor George E. Pataki's initiatives to provide the public with the
most current information in State government so that they can make
better informed decisions, particularly when it comes to their health
care."
The
website offers the general public, health care providers and
researchers access to improved search capabilities, global navigation
features and an 'A to Z' index in both English and Spanish. The web
site also provides user-friendly links to 'help' and department
'contact' information.
The
department's website has grown to include more than 45,000 documents
and receives more than 30 million hits each year. The physician profile
page alone has experienced unprecedented volume, with more than 3.5
million hits so far this year. 9-15-05
