Probation Officer Sentenced For Keeping Fines

A former probation officer with the Franklin County probation department was sentenced to five concurrent terms of two to six years in state prison for stealing from clients.

John Santy, 50, of Malone, a 25-year veteran of the probation department, pleaded guilty in July to grand larceny, forgery and tampering with public records.

In his statement before sentencing, Santy said apologized to his friends and family saying that he had “betrayed their trust…..I have shamed them greatly”.

Acting Franklin County Court judge Jerome Richards also sentenced Santy to one to four years on a fraud charge and dismissed a misconduct charge. Santy was ordered to pay $52,000 in restitution.

Officials began investigating Santy after a probationer learned his payments hadn’t been made to the proper authorities although he had receipts which proved that he had paid the money to Santy. It was determined that Santy was keeping the money that probationers were paying towards court-ordered fines and accepting cash for forging the signatures of judges in order to reinstate driving privileges of probationers. 9-15-05
