An
overview of how New York State courts are organized and the kinds of
work they do is presented in a new publication entitled “The
New York State Courts: An Introductory Guide” presented by
the New York State Unified Court System.
The
20-page booklet contains a forward by Chief Judge Judith Kaye who
encourages citizen interest in the court system. She says despite
“all the activity and impact” of the court system,
many people are unfamiliar with the state court system and structure.
Among the topics presented in the booklet are court structure and
authority, court resources available to the public and court related
programs and topics including assigned counsel, attorney disciplinary
program, how to file a complaint and law guardians.
Also
included is an attorney directory and assistance for litigants without
lawyers.

booklet can be found at http://www.nycourts.gov/admin/NYCourts-IntroGuide.pdf 9-17-05
