Biology Teacher Charged With Defiling Corpse

ROCKY GAP, VA-A biology and earth science teacher took a field trip at bit too bar and has been charged with disturbing and defiling a dead person from a place of burial, a felony.

Candace Longworth, 31, who has been suspended from her teaching duties at Rocky Gap High School, also faces charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor for involving two students in the break-in of a century-old funeral vault in Pocahontas Cemetery. She is alleged to have had two students hold bones from the corpse while she took pictures.

According to the Tazewell County Sheriff's office, Longworth and two students visited the cemetery and found a grave that had either been opened by natural occurrence or by someone else. The trio allegedly entered the grave and handled the bones but didn't remove them from the vault.

One of the students allegedly showed the photographs at school, capturing the attention of another teacher who reported it to police.

The cemetery is situated along the West Virginia border. The vault holds the remains of 114 coal miners who died in an 1884 mine explosion. 10-08-06
