More than $5 million has been awarded to 30 teaching hospitals and Graduate Medical Education (GME) consortia statewide to support clinical research training opportunities for physicians.
The funding is part of the State's GME Reform initiatives and will help advance New York's world-class medical education training programs and biomedical research efforts.
"New York has some of the finest doctors, nurses and hospitals in the nation," Gov. George Pataki said. "The graduate medical education initiative announced helps ensure access to skilled training and research for New York's physicians. The patient care provided by young doctors in training is the most critical aspect of their educational experience. New York's comprehensive graduate medical education initiatives provide new physicians with the skills and background they need to flourish in medicine."
This initiative builds on the Governor's commitment to supporting skilled clinical research training under the Empire Clinical Research Investigator Program (ECRIP). This ongoing initiative has supported over 200 research positions in New York's teaching hospitals throughout the state. Since 2002, the Governor has dedicated $22.5 million to this initiative.
