Former Schiavo Guardian Ad Litem Seeks Black Robe

NEW PORT RICHEY, FL---Now that Terri Schiavo has died, where are all the key players in the case?

Apparently headed for judgeships in the same circuit court system that caused her death.

Richard Pearse, Clearwater attorney, was appointed as the disabled woman's guardian ad litem. He filed his report with the court in December, 1998, urging that the court deny the petition to remove Terri's feeding tube.

He also recommended to Pinellas County Court judge George Greer that a guardian ad litem be appointed to protect her interests and indicated he did not believe Michael Schiavo and his sudden recollection that Terri would not want to live by a feeding tube.

Pearse is among the 26 candidates who were interviewed Saturday by the Sixth Judicial Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission for three new judgeships in Pasco County.

Following the interviews, the JNC will make recommendations to Gov. Jeb Bush, who will fill the three positions - two circuit judgeships and a Pasco County judgeship - from the JNC-approved list. The new positions are the last to be filled after the 2005 Legislature approved a total of five new positions for the Circuit, which includes Pasco and Pinellas counties. The new judges will take the bench in January. Once the interviews are complete, the commission will select no more than six candidates for each position. By law, Bush will have 60 days to select appointees from the JNC's lists.

Three current Pinellas County judges - Shawn Crane, Walt Fullerton and Dorothy Vaccaro - are applicants for the circuit position.

Others who were interviewed for one or more of the three vacancies are Nancy McClain Alfonso, Robert Scott Andringa, Bill Bennett, Patricia A. Carroll, Philip Michael Cohen, Kenneth V Compton, Thane Covert, Jack Day, Paul Firmani, Frank Grey II, Jack Hellinger, Bruce Johnson, Nathaniel Kidder, Randall Love, Glenn Martin, Richard Pearse, Beverly Plummer, Michael Eric Rosario, Charles Samaha, Walter Schafer, Pat Siracusa, Heather Stathopoulos, and Anne Wansboro.
