Chief Judge Still Pushing For Pay Hikes

New York's Chief Judge Judith Kaye is continuing her drive for pay hikes for the state's judiciary, including herself.

Kaye wants state Supreme Court judges to receive $162,100 annually, the same salary that's paid to U.S. District Court judges. They currently receive $136,700.

State judges last received a salary increase in 1999 and Kaye said that eight years without a raise for the judges is "shameful". She predicted that the legislature would grant the increases next year although a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno said the issue wasn't a priority for the Senate.

Under the proposal, Kaye's annual salary would be hiked from $156,000 to $178,310 and the other judges on the Court of Appeals, the state's highest court, would increase from $151,200 to $175,068 each.

New York's judicial salaries rank seventh in the country according to the National Center for State Courts. 10-22-05
