BINGHAMTON---A dialysis nurse who smeared his blood on a stone column outside U.S. District Court during an anti-war protest last month has pleaded guilty to attempting to damage federal property, a misdemeanor.
Gary Kline, 50, of Montour Falls, faces up to year in federal prison and a $100,000 fine when he's sentenced on Feb. 17. Federal prosecutors say he's not expected to serve prison time.
Kline was among the protestors outside the federal courthouse in Binghamton where four Ithaca peace activists, named the St. Patrick's Four, were on trial for smearing their blood at a U.S. Army and Marine Corps recruiting station near Ithaca in March, 2003. The four, members of the social justice organization, Catholic Workers, were protesting the then impending war in Iraq.
They were originally charged with conspiracy to impede an officer of the U.S. but were acquitted of following trial, convicted instead of damaging governmental property and entering a military recruiting station for unlawful purposes.
The four will be sentenced in January and each face up to a year in federal prison. 10-24-05
