MOUNT VERNON---The former executive director of the Mount Vernon Overall Development Corporation has been sentenced to one to three years in state prison after pleading guilty to third degree grand larceny.
William Ewell, 34, of Tomahawk Highway, Herrels, NC, stole approximately $48,563 of state and federal grant money from the agency. The thefts occurred between April, 2005 and October, 2005 and occurred while he was employed as the executive director of the development corporation. He has signed an order of restitution as part of his sentencing.
Ewell wrote 35 checks payable to himself on the corporate account and forged the signatures of two other officers of the corporation on the checks. He then used the funds for his own personal use. When the thefts were discovered the defendant fled to North Carolina.
The Mount Vernon Overall Development Corporation disburses federal and state grant funds to assist in economic development in the City of Mount Vernon.
Ewell was arrested and taken into custody when he returned to Mount Vernon on April 1. He has been in custody at the Westchester County Jail since then. 10-23-06
