It must be déjà vu.
When Tops Markets bought 12 grocery stores in the Adirondacks in 2001, they were being operated as Grand Unions.
And now they're going to become Grand Union stores again.
C&S Wholesale Grocers, based in Keene, NH, recently bought the 12 grocery stores and have announced they will be converted to Grand Unions. C&S had acquired Grand Union Family Markets in 2001 when it declared bankruptcy.
C&S will assume operation of the 12 outlets in mid-February. They are two stores in Saranac Lake and those in Hamilton, Elizabethtown, Bolton Landing, Ausable Forks, Schroon Lake, Peru, North Creek, Corinth, Warrensburg and Chestertown.
C&S is the second largest grocery wholesaler in the U.S. Its customers have included grocery chains and large independent food stores like Tops, Safeway, Shaw's and Great American, among others. 10-25-05
