Ex-Sing Sing CO Pleads To Bogus Workers Comp Claim

PUTNAM VALLEY---A former New York State Corrections Officer who was assigned to the Sing Sing Correctional Facility in Ossining, has pleaded guilty to falsely receiving workers compensation benefits.

Leo Coletti Jr, , 43, of Putnam Valley, pleaded guilty to one count of second degree grand larceny, a class C felony, and one count of filing a false return under the New York State Tax Law.

Coletti claimed a work related injury to his knee in June, 2000 and subsequently collected over $110,000 in benefits and medical compensation from the New York State Insurance Fund.

While he was claiming injury and receiving worker's compensation benefits, Coletti was doing nearly three-quarters of a million dollars in home improvement construction work at various locations in Westchester County.

When questioned, under oath, about any outside work activity at numerous Workers' Compensation hearings, Coletti repeatedly denied doing any such activity.

Colletti also filed grossly understated tax returns not reflecting the additional earnings. He will be sentenced on Feb. 15. He faces up to 15 years in state prison. 11-02-06
